Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
National identity refers to a sense of belonging to a nation, characterized by shared culture, history, and values. Print media has historically played a significant role in fostering national identity by disseminating information that unites people across diverse ethnic, religious, and social groups (Ahmed & Musa, 2023). In Minna Local Government, Niger State, newspapers, magazines, and other print publications serve as platforms for promoting the cultural heritage, achievements, and aspirations of Nigeria as a nation. By highlighting stories of national unity, celebrating cultural diversity, and addressing challenges to national cohesion, print media contributes to building a collective sense of identity among citizens (Olawale et al., 2024). However, the influence of print media in this role faces challenges such as declining readership, competition from digital platforms, and biases in content delivery. This study investigates how print media promotes national identity in Minna Local Government, examining its strategies, impact, and areas for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In an era of increasing polarization and regionalism, fostering national identity remains a critical challenge for Nigeria. While print media has the potential to unify diverse communities through shared narratives, its effectiveness in promoting national identity in Minna Local Government is under-researched. Issues such as media bias, lack of access to diverse perspectives, and the overshadowing influence of digital platforms further complicate this role. This study seeks to address these gaps by analyzing the role of print media in promoting national identity, identifying its challenges, and suggesting strategies for enhancement.
